Nottingham Guitar Lessons with Derek Crehan

Who am I?

Derek Crehan, Professional Musician.

I am a professional musician and music educator with over 40 years of teaching and playing experience. Whether it's Jazz or Blues, from Punk to Pop, Baroque to Rock and Folk to Funk my passion and experience spans the range of traditional, popular and contemporary styles.

Since 1980 I have taught guitar and bass throughout Nottingham, presently I teach both privately and in local schools and colleges. My students have a 100% pass rate in graded exams and I am proud to work with students from diverse backgrounds and of all ages and ability levels.

I have toured, recorded and organised educational workshops throughout the UK and Europe and have been fortunate to work alongside many world-class musicians. This has given me personal experience of a huge variety of musical settings from solo/small group performance to orchestral/musical theatre and festivals. When at home I'm also very active in Nottingham's music scene and you'll often find me out playing and supporting local musicians and music venues.

Professional, Personal Guitar & Bass Tuition

What I do

Online Skype guitar and bass lessons

I offer guitar lessons and bass tuition via Skype from my home studio in Nottingham (United Kingdom). To always give you the perfect view my lessons use multiple camera angles so you'll clearly see how both hands play together. Every lesson comes complete with a digital lesson pack which you download and keep. These packs contain the music, lesson notes and backing tracks you'll need to get the most from your own practise.

Lessons are personalised to your needs

Playing music can be hugely rewarding, but learning and progressing can sometimes be hard work. So, once you've mastered the basics we'll keep things fun by learning the songs and tunes that you want to play, arranged to suit and stretch your present abilities. If you plan to study music at school or college then you may also be interested in taking music exams; I'm always happy to help students practise and prepare for their qualifications.

All ages and abilities welcome

I work with students from age eight and upwards - I also enjoy teaching adults, who have often not played an instrument before - you are never too old to learn! I welcome students of all levels, from beginers taking their first steps to experienced players wanting to develop specific aspects of their theorietical knowledge or technique. With over fourty years experience in education I am also very familiar with helping students who may face specific challenges when learning a musical instrument.

Learning Guitar or Bass via Skype

Getting Started

What you'll need to learn guitar or bass via Skype

If you're serious about learning to play then you'll really need to have access to an instrument so that you can begin lessons and for your own practice. If you don't already have your own instrument then I'm happy to offer you some advice regarding what to purchase and where too look. For online/Skype lessons you'll need a broadband internet connection, a Skype account (it's free and easy to sign up/setup) and a PC/Mac/laptop or mobile phone/tablet with microphone and webcam - We will talk about how best to set things at your home during your introductory lesson.

Your first half hour lesson is free and without obligation. We'll have a chat about your musical ambitions and we'll take this opportunity to understand how best to move you forward. How do regular lessons work?

Lesson times for online learning can be flexible but most students prefer a half-hour or hour long lesson at a regular time each week. During our free introductory lesson we'll agree a convenient day and time for your lessons, when our appointment comes I'll call you at the start of your lesson. Of course, you're also welcome to call me in between lessons if there's anything you need a little help with.

Lessons are paid for by electronic bank transfer, to avoid misunderstandings I ask that funds reach my account twenty-four hours before the time of your lesson. I am happy to offer discounts for block bookings and am always happy to accomodate cancellations/rescheduling provided that you can give me twenty-four hours notice.
